Small Habits, Big Changes
Hey everyone! Here are some things that I am musing over at the start of this new year.
During this time, it’s natural for us to reflect on the changes we want to make and the goals we hope to achieve. Often, we can set big resolutions, dreaming of grand transformations. However, the wisdom of both modern thought and ancient teachings reminds us that sometimes, it’s the small habits that lead to the most significant changes.
James Clear, in his book “Atomic Habits,” emphasizes the transformative power of small habits. He writes, ” Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become..”
This idea isn’t new, but resonates with a timeless teaching from Jesus, who spoke about the impact of faith the size of a mustard seed. In Matthew (17:20), Jesus says, “Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”
So here’s the thought – Start small!
Jesus’ analogy of faith the size of a mustard seed implies that even the smallest seed of faith can lead to monumental outcomes. Similarly, the small habits we cultivate daily can accumulate and pave the way for transformative change. Whether it’s adding to a few minutes of extra time with Jesus each morning, or upping the steps on our step count, small changes can eventually have a huge impact.
James Clear’s concept of the “compound effect” aligns with the idea of incremental progress. He suggests that small habits, when repeated consistently, lead to exponential growth over time. Just as a single mustard seed can grow into a large tree, small, positive habits can compound to create profound results. Whether it’s saving a small amount of money regularly, exercising for a few minutes each day, or learning a new skill in bite-sized increments, these habits contribute to significant changes in the long run.
As we step into the new year, let’s remember that significant change often begins with small, intentional actions. Cultivate habits that align with your aspirations, have faith in the small steps, and trust that God is at work in the smallest detail of our lives, transforming us into the people he has created us to be.
So here is the question I am asking myself at the start of 2024; what is one small change you can make, that might have a big impact across this year?
Here’s to a great year everyone!
