The Grass is Greener
I absolutely love summer. The longer days. The warmth in the sun. Holiday season. Summer really does lift people. The one thing I don’t enjoy, is how the sun scolds the grass and turns it brown. My garden goes from looking like the Wembley football pitch (yes, I do put stripes in it when I cut the grass!) to a waste disposal site with dying grass everywhere I look.
There is a picture here of our lives also. The drier seasons in our lives can zap our energy and stop our growth. The once green landscape of our life can turn bare and fruitless.
Isaiah 44:3 – “For I will pour out water to quench your thirst and to irrigate your parched fields. And I will pour out my Spirit on your descendants, and my blessing on your children.”
Three water themed words to pick out of this passage to reflect on:
- Quench. What are you thirsting for? What do you long for God to do in your life? Water brings forth life – Don’t get stuck at the thirsting stage, God wants to quench that thirst right now!
- Irrigate. Farmers irrigate their fields to allow water to have channels to flow into where their crops are planted. The irrigation directs water to where it needs to go, bringing growth. What areas of your life need some irrigating? What areas of your life do you have stagnant water, due to blockages and not allowing Him to flow through you? Allow God to dig some new channels to allow His Spirit to flow within you.
- Pour. God is a God over the overflowing. He wants to pour over you. Spend a few minutes allowing Him to do so.
In the next verse, Isaiah 44:4, we see the outcome of the quenching, irrigating and pouring…
“They will thrive like watered grass, like willows on a riverbank.”
THRIVE. THRIVE. THRIVE. In order to THRIVE, we need God’s Spirit (water) poured out over us.
Back to my grass….. At the end of summer, the heavens opened…. Literally! The rain poured down and within a few days, there was new life, new growth and my grass become green again. Funnily enough, it now looks greener than ever.
My prayer for you is that as you reflect on this, you expose the drier areas of your life to Him, and allow Him to pour His Spirit over you so that you can thrive.
My grass is greener, may your life be greener too….
