Faith in the Fire

There are some stories in the Bible that never lose their power, no matter how many times you read them. The story of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in Daniel 3 is one of them. I have been reflecting on this story over the last month in preparation for OC Kids. Reading the story, it sounds like an incredible adventure - almost too unbelievable to be true. I’ve realised that this story isn’t simply about a miraculous rescue. It’s about unwavering faith, courageous obedience and the unchanging presence of God.

If we’re honest, most of us won’t ever be asked to stand before a King and choose between worshipping an idol or being thrown into a furnace (I hope not anyway!!) But we are faced with smaller decisions every day. Will we compromise our values to fit in? Will we remain faithful when it’s unpopular? Will we trust God when obedience comes at a cost?

Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego’s response has always challenged me.

“If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it… But even if He does not, we want you to know… we will not serve your gods.” (Daniel 3:17-18)

Those three words - “even if not” - are some super powerful words!

Their faith wasn’t based on the outcome they hoped for. It wasn’t dependent on God rescuing them from the fire. Their faith rested in who God was, not in what He might do.

I find it easy to trust God when my prayers are answered quickly, when doors open and life makes sense. It’s much harder when I might be waiting for healing, searching for work, grieving a loss or praying for someone close. In these moments, it is tempting to measure God’s faithfulness by my circumstances.

Yet Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego remind us that Faith isn’t saying, “God will definitely make this easy.” Faith says, “Whatever happens, God is still worthy of my trust.”

Then comes the moment that changes everything. King Nebuchadnezzar looks into the furnace expecting to see three men consumed by flames. Instead, he sees four.

“Didn’t we throw three men into the fire?… Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.” (Daniel 3:24-25)

God didn’t stop them entering the fire. He met them in it.

That’s often how God works in our lives too. We pray for Him to remove the difficult season, but sometimes He chooses to reveal His presence within it instead. We ask Him to take away the pain, yet He walks beside us through it. We long for immediate answers, while He quietly reminds us that we are never alone.

It’s also worth noticing what happened when they came out of the furnace. It says they weren’t burned. Their clothes weren’t damaged. They didn’t even smell of smoke. The fire that was meant to destroy them became the very place where God’s power was revealed. WOW!!! I wonder how many times in our own lives we look back and realise that the season we feared most became the season where we knew God most deeply.

Perhaps you're in a "fiery furnace" right now. It may not be obvious to anyone else. Your furnace might be anxiety that keeps you awake at night, uncertainty about the future, family struggles, illness, disappointment, or simply the weight of feeling overwhelmed and exhausted.

The story of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego doesn't promise that, as Christians, we will be spared from life's difficult seasons. Instead, it offers something far more reassuring: the certainty of God's presence. He is with us in every trial, faithful in every circumstance, and unchanging through every season. The same God who stood alongside Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in the blazing furnace is the very same God who walks beside us today.

Whatever fire you may be facing, you do not face it alone.

Remember this:

‘The Fire’ does not have the final word.

Fear does not have the final word.

Our situation does not have the final word.

God does.
